Long time, no see! In this issue we share what we've been putting together over the past several months: a guide to touring for emerging artists! This is a first in a series of guides that aim to help artists just starting out.
Check out our about page to learn about who we are and why we started The Hum.
Background
We started planning our Touring Guide a few months back with the goal of providing tips, tricks, and things to be aware of for emerging artists touring today. Touring is more than getting in a van and hitting the road — it’s a balancing act of honing stagecraft, building relationships, managing finances, and maintaining one’s mental health.
In addition to anecdotes from our friends who’ve toured, we wanted to understand if there are ways to tour smartly and strategically. To gather this information we spoke with people from various parts of the industry such as band and tour managers from the artist side and talent bookers from the venue side. We’re incredibly grateful to those who volunteered their time to share their experience with touring or working with bands on tour.
The Guide
Leaning into the DIY nature of touring and music in general, we made the guide into a zine. The digital PDF is below for download, scroll below to see the pages directly. We will also be making a limited run of physical copies that we will to distribute in our local music scenes, maybe one will make its way to wherever you’re reading from!
